LG plays down “Nexus 5” rumours

28 MAY 2013

LG Electronics announced a white version of its Nexus 4 smartphone, as an executive from the company played down reports it is set to manufacture the next model in the Nexus device line.

According to reports originating from Dutch website All About Phones, while Nexus 4 has been a “great success” despite production issues, the company does not need “such a marketing success again”.

Instead, the company will focus on offering devices powered by its own tailored version of Android, rather than the stock incarnation used in the Nexus line.

This also means that LG will not offer a “Google Edition” of its smartphones, as Samsung has with the Galaxy S4.

Earlier this month, the Korea Times reported that LG was working with Google on another Nexus-branded smartphone, following a visit of Larry Page, Google’s CEO, to South Korea, which included a meeting with Koo Bon-joon, CEO of LG.

The Nexus 4 White, announced today, is the same as the previous version, but “in a stylish and attractive colour option”.

It is available in Hong Kong now, and will roll out globally in select markets in Asia, North America, Europe and the Middle East over the coming weeks.
