Malaysia’s YTL launched its WiMAX services in the country, using the “Yes” brand, with the company having deployed 1,500 base stations to achieve 65 percent population coverage – an additional 1,000 sites are planned to be deployed in 2011, to achieve the stated 80 percent coverage goal. According to Computerworld, the YTL is trumpeting its position as the first WiMAX player with a “fully convergent service,” with both voice and data traffic carried on the same end-to-end IP infrastructure. Ahead of the launch, Malaysian newspaper The Star said that YTL had claimed “dramatic” demand for its services, with pre-registrations three-times the expected levels.
