The technology world is making a lot of noise about the promise of mobile payments, rolling out tools that allow people to hand over money to restaurants, shops and more through their smart phones.But the major credit card companies, which have mainly competed against only checks and cash in this market for decades, aren’t about to cede such lucrative ground.Visa Inc. of San Francisco expects to be the platform powering many of these new payment products, and is busy testing its own.  The credit card giant is conducting trials with Wells Fargo & Co., Bank of America Corp., JPMorgan Chase Co. and U.S. Bancorp, allowing customers to spend money from their existing debit or credit card accounts via their smart phones.
