MVNO Virgin Mobile is set to enter the Indian market by the first quarter of 2008. The firm’s founder Richard Branson told local reporters that “it will not be long before we enter the mobile phone business in India… We have already applied for relevant permission to enter the market and have a partner now.”
Branson did not disclose the name of the Indian partner — “Give me two-and-a-half months to talk about that” — but speculation suggests Tata Teleservices could be a possible ally. Virgin Mobile is present in six countries; the U.S., the U.K., France, South Africa, Australia and Canada.
