Voxiva, the firm behind the popular SMS-based Text4baby pregnancy advice service in the US, is taking a similar approach to supporting diabetes patients with its new Care4life service. Text messaging, a personalised web portal and a mobile app are key parts of the new service which is targeted at patients with Type 2 diabetes.

The new service focuses on education and adherence to the patient’s treatment regime. It allows patients to build up an electronic record of their blood glucose readings, blood pressure, weight and the amount of exercise they take. Patients can view the data online and share it with their health providers.

The content is authored by a diabetes expert, Theresa Garnero, who points to the daily reinforcement via SMS as being the key feature of Care4life.

Voxiva is offering qualifying health plans and provider networks the opportunity to sign up their members to Care4life for no charge during the rest of 2012. And the service is currently being trialled by HealthInsight, a care delivery network in the Utah Beacon network.
