Biobeats, a health start-up, has raised $650,000 in funding from a range of investors including actor Will Smith.

The start-up’s strategy is to encourage users to upload data about their vital signs such as heart rate to the company. This data will then be used to create entertainment apps that are intended to keep users engaged with a healthy lifestyle.

The idea is that musicians will create what the company calls “adaptive media”. This is described as “media that reacts in real time to the body’s environment and vitals signs” by founder Nadeem Kassam (pictured), according to Techcrunch.

Beyond heart beats, the other kinds of data the firm wants to attract include sleep tracking and daily calorie intake. The description of the strategy is similar to many health-tracking start-ups with the addition of the entertainment angle.

But Biobeats is also interested in participating in medical research, using the data it can potentially gather from interested users.

Other investors included  angel investor Kevin Colleran. Justin Bieber’s manager Scooter Braun, entertainment lawyer Ken Hertz and actor Damon Wayans.
