Sprint has announced an in-vehicle communications platform for car makers which it claims will allow them to generate new sources of revenue by providing a range of entertainment features and services.

Services that can be provided via ‘Sprint Velocity’ include music, news, weather updates, security, navigation, remote connections for mobile devices, emergency services and engine diagnostics.

The technology can be customised by car makers as a complete turnkey platform or on a modular basis, depending on customer needs.

Sprint VP of emerging solutions Wayne Ward said the platform provides a “single point of mobile integration and enablement” and vehicle manufacturers can work with Sprint to get the features they want.

“We believe Sprint Velocity is the most technologically advanced and most comprehensive connected services platform for auto manufacturers, wherever they’re located around the globe,” he added.

Sprint Velocity was unveiled as part of the Technology Showcase at the Los Angeles Auto Show.
