Report: America Movil mulling Polish buy

24 AUG 2012

America Movil is reported to be mulling a bid for Play, the smallest mobile operator in Poland, as part of its ongoing European expansion.

According to reports originating from local daily Puls Biznesu, the move comes as the Latin American giant also considers an investment in Polish wholesale fibre-optic network operator Hawe.

America Movil had previously been suggested as a possible buyer for Polkomtel, the larger Polish mobile operator sold last year, although it is not believed to have made it onto the shortlist of bidders.

Wireless Intelligence figures show that T-Mobile Poland has recently become the biggest operator in the market, with 15 million subscribers (28.9 percent market share), overtaking Orange Poland, which has 14.8 million (28.6 percent).

Polkomtel, which uses the Plus brand, is in third place with 13.8 million customers (26.6 percent), while Play is in fourth with 7.5 million (14.4 percent).

America Movil has recently made several moves into Europe, acquiring stakes in Telekom Austria and KPN, although it has also played-down reports linking it to TeliaSonera’s Yoigo unit in Spain.

KPN and Telekom Austria both give America Movil a presence in Central and Eastern Europe, although neither of them has an operation in Poland.
