NTT Docomo said it will phase-out its Widestar satellite phone service on 31 March 2014, as it focuses its resources on the replacement Widestar II operations. Widestar provides voice and packet communications services throughout Japan and up to 200 nautical miles from the coast, using two geostationary satellites in orbit over the country.
