Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN)  today announced it is teaming with Fujitsu on development of core network kit for NTT DoCoMo’s future LTE deployment. The announcement from the Finnish-headquartered vendor follows an earlier individual announcement from Fujitsu, as well as a separate rival announcement from NEC.

A joint statement from NSN and Fujitsu revealed little detail about the deal, but suggests DoCoMo is on track to become one of the world’s first operators to commercially launch LTE technology (what the operator also calls ‘Super 3G’). In March the operator said it had achieved downlink speeds of 250 Mb/s in a field trial. LTE is expected to become the next-generation technology of choice for most mobile operators around the world, with commercial launches expected from 2010. Earlier this month it was reported that DoCoMo rival eMobile has also applied for an LTE field trial license.
