Motorola is reported to be launching a new Android-based LTE smartphone this week that will see the firm revive its famous RAZR brand.

Speculation on the Internet has been sparked by a teaser video (see below), which promises that the new device will be unveiled tomorrow.

BGR reports that the device will be part of Motorola’s DROID range for US market leader Verizon Wireless, possibly to be called the DROID RAZR. It is understood to feature a 4.3-inch display and 1.2GHz dual processor. It is likely to be marketed as the “thinnest” LTE smartphone to date – a key selling point of the original RAZR which was a huge hit for Motorola in the 2000s.

The handset will be positioned in competition with the new iPhone (which doesn’t support LTE) and Samsung’s new Nexus Prime, which is also due to launch this week and will be the first smartphone running the new Android version, Ice Cream Sandwich.

The market for 4G devices is beginning to heat up in the US. An new study by NPD said that HTC was the top 4G smartphone vendor in the US in Q2 with a 62 percent market share. The Taiwanese vendor had the top three best-selling 4G models across three different US operators: the WiMAX-based HTC EVO 4G on Sprint Nextel, the HTC Inspire 4G (LTE) on AT&T, and the HTC Thunderbolt (LTE) on Verizon Wireless.

According to NPD, Samsung was the second-largest US 4G vendor with a 22 percent share, followed by Motorola (11 percent) and LG (4 percent).
