Austria-based operator group Telekom Austria achieved a 5.7 percent growth in its mobile customer base in 2011 but still made a substantial loss. The group – which also operates in the Balkan markets – reported a 4.2 percent decrease in revenue from EUR4.65 billion in 2010 to EUR4.45 billion. It saw a net loss of EUR252.8 million compared to a EUR195.2 million profit in 2010. The company attributed the loss to “unfavorable macro-economic development” and “persistently strong competition” with regulatory measures, such as cuts in roaming tariffs and mobile termination rates, also playing a part. The company also spent EUR233.7 million on a personnel downsizing programme during 2011.
