An increase in mobile broadband spectrum is crucial for socio-economic development in sub-Saharan Africa, according to the GSMA. A new report forecasts that the release of digital dividend and 2.6GHz spectrum by 2015 could create up to 27 million jobs, increase GDP per capita by 5.2 percent and lift 40 million people living in sub-Saharan Africa out of poverty by 2025. The report, published by the GSMA and Plum Consulting, also claims that the moves would increase GDP and government tax revenues by US$82 billion and US$18 billion per year respectively by 2025.
