Mexican market leader Telcel has not been awarded spectrum in the country’s auction of spectrum in the 1850-1990 MHz frequency band. Operators Telefonica and Iusacell were successful, whilst a consortium formed by media company Grupo Televisa’s unit Nextel Mexico won a single 10MHz block with a MXN48.3 million bid. The combined bids were worth MXN2.98 billion (US$230 million). Dow Jones Newswires notes that regulator Cofetel is also holding a separate auction for spectrum in the 1710-2170MHz bands, which is capable of supporting high-capacity mobile data services.
