US operator MetroPCS yesterday reported a 19 percent increase year-on-year in revenue to US$1.2 billion in the second quarter, off the back of growing demand for Android smartphones and its “no annual contract” services. Net income came in at US$84 million, up 6 percent, compared with US$80 million in the same period last year. MetroPCS added 200,000 net subscribers in the quarter, marking a 19 percent increase in total subscribers over the 12-month period from the second quarter last year. However, the firm fell short of analyst expectations for revenue and warned that already-weak second-quarter subscriber numbers would worsen in the current quarter.
