Hewlett-Packard (HP) has reaffirmed plans to launch tablets running WebOS and Windows platforms, whilst turning its back on smartphone software from Google. HP is on track to deliver a tablet computer running WebOS early next year, as well as a Windows-based tablet that will ship sooner, Jon Rubinstein, the Palm chief executive who has stayed on to lead HP’s gadgets business (following HP’s US$1.2 billion purchase of Palm earlier this year), told the Financial Times. It has abandoned a project to launch a smartphone based on Google’s Android open-source operating system and there will be no tablet based on the system, Mr Rubinstein said.
