Germany’s largest cable operator, Kabel Deutschland (KDG), has struck a deal with O2 Germany to offer mobile services, reports Rapid TV News. The deal allows KDG to offer a ‘quadruple play’ service, by combining mobile with its existing fixed-line, Internet and cable TV services. The new mobile service – known simply as ‘Mobile Phone’ – is available only to KDG’s existing subscribers and offers free calls to KDG fixed-line and mobile customers. Calls to other fixed-line or mobile numbers within Germany cost EUR0.15 per minute, while an SMS costs EUR0.15; a flat-rate EUR4.99 per month package offers unlimited calls to German fixed-line numbers. Mobile Internet access costs EUR1.99 per day and a compatible 3G USB stick is available for EUR69.95.

According to the report, KDG is the first cable operator in Germany to offer a quadruple play package. The move is seen as a way to better compete with local broadband (ADSL) providers such as United Internet, Arcor, HanseNet and NetCologne, which already offer mobile services in conjunction with Internet services. According to the company’s first-quarter 2009 figures (announced this week), the number of revenue generating units (customers) at KDG grew by 1.08 million year-on-year to 11.6 million. The company reported a 15 percent annual rise in revenue to EUR1.37 billion and EBITDA up 25 percent to EUR571 million, as the company was boosted by growth in its Internet and telephony services.
