Nepal Monitor, a national online journal, calls for mobile money in Nepal in an article written to address falling market share for the incumbent operator in the market.

What I found most interesting about this article is the idea that consumers, educated about successes in other markets, may start to demand mobile money services for themselves. Clearly this article is far cry from such a situation but the concept of consumer demand driving mobile money deployments is an appealing one.

Especially when you consider that operators in developing markets generally have difficult choices to make regarding its capital expenditure. Operators need to build capacity and extend coverage in such markets and mobile money deployments may not present as simple a cost benefit analysis due to lack of data. In light of this, consumer demand can provide a real metric to support the business case for mobile money services. Do you agree?
