Nortel Networks has announced that Ciena is the successful bidder for its Optical Networking and Carrier Ethernet businesses. Ciena will pay US$530 million in cash plus US$239 million principal amount of convertible notes due June 2017. The deal is believed to be a blow to Nokia Siemens Networks, which previously lost out to Ericsson on Nortel’s auction of its CDMA and LTE radio access assets. Meanwhile Nortel said Friday that it has postponed again the sale of its GSM/GSM-R business. In a statement, Nortel said it is continuing discussion with “interested parties,” and “will provide an update on matters relating to the sale of the GSM/GSM-R business during the week of November 23, 2009.”
