This report is a short summary of a review of 30 models of remote access banking initiatives from around the world. The purpose of the study was to identify models that might work in Southern Africa for offering access to financial services outside the traditional delivery channels of bank branches and life insurance offices

The models were taken from Southern African countries and from countries outside the region. The main geographical areas of innovation in this field are Africa and the Americas, together with a few countries in Asia. Most of the models are domestically rooted but a few emerge from the remitting end of the international remittance chain About half the models are African and the other half are from outside the continent.
