Boston Scientific, the US manufacturer of medical devices which agreed with Vodafone earlier this year to jointly launch a remote health monitoring service, has launched a wireless-enabled system for monitoring some of its own pacemakers in Europe. The company launched the new system called Latitude NXT at a hospital in Italy.

The hospital in Verona added the wireless capability to monitor a patient with one of Boston Scientific’s Ingenio range of cardiac implants. The patient also received a wireless-based home communicator to upload data to their physician.  The data uploaded can replace some follow-up visits to a clinic, says the company. Mobihealthnews points out that Latitude NXT is still pending FDA clearance to go on sale in the US.

Separately Boston Scientific agreed several months ago to work with Vodafone on remote health monitoring. The partners did not reveal the type of patient they will monitor. The service will launch towards the end of 2012.
