A mobile app that enables patients with long-term conditions to monitor their own blood pressure won top prize at healthcare publisher BMJ’s first hack day in London.

The app is the brainchild of Andrea Weir and Alok Matta who joined forces with Anne Marie Cunningham, a GP and clinical lecturer at the University of Cardiff.

The judges praised the app for its “simplicity and cheapness”.

The winners will now work with the BMJ on developing the idea. For instance, they will look at how to send data from patient to GP, and how to extend the app to other chronic conditions.

Second place went to a reward-based game which aimed to make revision more appealing for medical students.
