US number-two operator AT&T saw a doubling of wireless data traffic between 2010 and 2011 and a 20,000 percent growth rate over the past five years. Senior executive VP for AT&T technology and network operations John Donovan wrote in a blog post that “a wireless data tsunami” is being created as consumers upgrade from feature phones to smartphones and the company adds new customers. Donovan added that the company expects to invest around US$20 billion on its networks in 2012, focusing on wireless services and LTE deployment.
