AT&T and Alere Health, a provider of personal health support, will later this year launch a service designed to help adults with type 2 diabetes to better manage their condition. The two companies will offer the service to health plans, insurers and corporate payers from the third quarter.

Users will enter their own blood glucose readings and medication into the service on compatible mobile devices or online and receive real-time feedback regarding their readings and any advice if any action is needed.  AT&T does not specify which devices are compatible with the service.

Alere Health says while there are “hundreds” of diabetes apps available, the two companies’ service is different because it “will be one of the first to be fully connected to a clinical system as part of an integrated plan of care”. Hence the Diabetes Manager service is targeted at higher risk, higher acuity patients.

Separate to the announcement, Alere has acquired Medapps, a company that specialises in connected home health monitoring devices, according to Mobihealthnews. The company offers a device that collects data from medical devices such as glucose meters and blood pressure monitors and then uploads to an online portal.
