Unstrung reports today that devices based on Google’s Android mobile operating system designed to work with Sprint/Clearwire’s new WiMAX network could ship some time next year. The report cites a research note by ThinkPanmure analyst Neeraj Singhania as well as recent comments by Clearwire CEO Ben Wolff who said he expected Android-based devices to arrive on the network in the coming years. “We understand that Clearwire is working with several manufacturers and application developers on Android-based products for its network, likely for 2009 launch,” wrote Singhania. “We believe that there are likely several efforts under way that are beyond Clearwire’s purview that will be launched on their network, given its open nature.”

The operator – a joint-venture between Sprint and Clearwire – plans to commercially launch its WiMAX network – known as ‘Xohm’ – in Baltimore on October 8 with further markets to be switched on in the following weeks. The service is expected to launch with a number of compatible handsets, likely to include the Nokia N810, the Finnish handset vendor’s first WiMAX device.
