Latin American operator group America Movil has pulled out of a deal to buy Digicel’s operations in El Salvador, reports Reuters. The company said it terminated the signed agreement to acquire 100 percent of the business with consent from the seller.

El Salvador’s competition regulator said last year that America Movil must sacrifice 20MHz of spectrum for the proposed acquisition of the county’s number-four operator to be approved.

The deal for America Movil to acquire the El Salvador business was first struck in March, with ownership of Digicel’s Honduras unit going in the same direction. Digicel acquired America Movil’s Claro network in Jamaica as part of the same agreement.

America Movil, which is owned by Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim, has recently expanded its interested in Europe by significantly boosting its stakes in Dutch operator KPN and Telekom Austria. The company was also recently rumoured to be interesting in investing in Polish operator Play.
