TeleGeography notes that Swedish regulator PTS has issued a decision approving a joint application from the country’s existing GSM mobile operators – TeliaSonera, Tele2, Telenor and Swefour – and currently 3G-only provider 3 Sweden for new allocations of frequencies in the 900MHz band. The decision that all current 900MHz licences will be renewed, and the entire available 900MHz frequency space will be assigned, will enable 3 to enter the 2G infrastructure-based market once the PTS approves the transfer of frequencies. Additionally, all operators will be allowed to phase in new mobile broadband technology including UMTS-based platforms in the 900MHz band.
