KPN confirms Base bids

02 APR 2015

KPN confirmed that “several parties have shown preliminary interest” in its Belgian mobile unit Base, and that it is exploring “all of its options” regarding the business.

The Netherlands-based company has previously explored the option of selling Base, although this course of action was taken off the cards in 2012 after it received “unsatisfactory” offers.

So far, no parties have come forward as potential buyers for Base, but Kester Mann of analyst firm CCS Insight suggested that cable player Liberty Global and the ambitious Altice may be in the frame.

According to GSMA Intelligence data, Base is the smallest operator in Belgium, accounting for around 24 per cent of the country’s connections. Other competitors are Proximus (Belgacom) and Mobistar (Orange).

Late last year KPN scaled-back some of Base’s operations, as it struggled to build its position in the fixed-market.

KPN has recently participated in the European consolidation game, selling its German unit E-Plus to Telefonica.

“Further announcements will be made, if and when appropriate,” KPN said.
