Intel inks smart glasses deal

05 DEC 2014

Intel announced a partnership with fashion group Luxottica to “fuse premium, luxury and sports eyewear with smart technology”.

However, the alliance is currently described as a “multiyear R&D collaboration”, although Intel also said that the first product with Luxottica is expected to launch in 2015.

In a statement, it was said that the aim is to “push the boundaries” to “anticipate what smart technology for eyewear will look like in the future”.

The ultimate goal, Intel said, is to “deliver smart, fashion-forward products that are meaningful and desirable to consumers”.

Brands owned by Luxottica include Ray-Ban and Oakley, while licensed brands include Giorgio Armani, Bulgari, Burberry, Dolce & Gabbana, Polo Ralph Lauren and Prada.

Earlier this year, Intel announced a partnership with watchmaker Fossil, to “further develop wearable technology for the fashion industry”.

According to recent reports, Intel is also set to power the next generation of Google’s Google Glass wearable.
