Yahoo is seeing increased usage of its mobile apps as its strategy of frequent updates appears to be having an impact, according to CEO Marissa Mayer.
Mayer said Yahoo’s recent growth in mobile has been driven by a “commitment to iteration and innovation”.
Over the past year, the company has increased the frequency in which it has updated its apps by 35 per cent. “We are now releasing more updates per app than any major player in the industry,” Mayer said when discussing Yahoo’s Q1 2014 results.
Looking at specific apps, Yahoo News Digest, which uses technology from its $30 million acquisition of Summly, has had a “tremendous response” since its January launch, with 40 per cent of downloads converted to daily active users.
The Yahoo Mail app has seen a 15 per cent growth in daily active users in the most recent quarter alone, while Yahoo Weather has seen a five-fold growth in daily active users since it was launched, with almost half of the user growth taking place in the first quarter of 2014.
The main Yahoo app continues to top the news category in Apple’s App Store, and take second place in Google Play. Since its relaunch a year ago, it has seen the number of daily active users treble.
Mayer also revealed that Yahoo now has 430 million monthly mobile users, representing a 30 per cent year-on-year growth, with more than 50 per cent of its monthly audience coming from mobile devices.
