Verizon began exploring the potential of 5G and mobile edge computing (MEC) to replace satellites in the transmission of ultra-high definition (UHD) news content, arguing the move could address key frustrations in current broadcasts.

The operator is conducting trials with Amazon Web Services (AWS), news broadcaster Bloomberg Media and streaming software outfit Zixi, focused on delivery of 4K-quality live feeds and near real-time translation of content for transcripts, captioning and subtitling.

Verizon’s trial is a marker for its use of AWS cloud-based storage and compute capabilities to provide services to enterprise customers.

The operator explained Zixi brings control plane technology to help reduce latency and simplify the connections between hosted software services and end-users.

Verizon launched its 5G Edge with AWS Wavelength in 2020, with the service now available in 17 US cities.
