Norway’s Telenor Group today changed the name of its subsidiary in India, Uninor, to Telenor India.

The Indian operator, with 48 million mobile connections, has almost a 5 per cent market share, making it the eighth largest operator among the country’s 12 mobile players, according to GSMA Intelligence.

Uninor is 100 per cent owned by Telenor Group and was set up in 2009.

“This is about more than changing a brand name. This is about preparing Telenor India for a new and exciting future,” said Telenor Group president and CEO Sigve Brekke (pictured).

Telenor India will spend INR1 billion ($15 million) over the coming months to promote the new brand in the six regions it operates in, the Economic Times said.

The operator offers only 2G service and promotes itself as being the most affordable and providing the best value. It hasn’t announced plans for a 3G or 4G rollout, but CEO Vivek Sood told the Times that it will make a move by the end of the first half of next year.

The group also operates under the Telenor name in Pakistan and Myanmar, where it has controlling interests in local operators, along with dtac in Thailand, DiGi in Malaysia and Grameenphone in Bangladesh.
