Telenor has pledged to cooperate fully with European and Norwegian regulators over allegations that the Norway-based operator giant has abused its dominant position in its home market.

The EFTA Surveillance Authority (ESA) and the Norwegian Competition Authority made a seemingly unannounced visit to Telenor’s Norwegian headquarters yesterday.

Telenor said in a statement that the investigation relates to “mobile communication services at wholesale and retail level in Norway, including voice, SMS, MMS and data, as well as mobile services sold in bundles that include other products/services.”

“They came to our offices today and their investigation relates to our leading position in the Norwegian market,” spokesman Tor Odland told Reuters yesterday. “We will of course cooperate with them.”

The Norwegian Competition Authority described the visit as a “raid” but revealed little else. “The fact that the Competition Authority carries out a raid does not mean that the companies are guilty of crimes and says nothing about the ultimate outcome of the case,” the watchdog said in a statement.

According to Wireless Intelligence, Telenor had 3.2 million mobile connections in Norway in Q3 2012, giving it an almost 50 percent market share. As the country’s fixed-line incumbent, it also controls about two-thirds of Norway’s fixed-line voice market.
