Samsung is set to grab the number one position in the global handset market for the full year 2012, according to research firm IHS iSuppli.
The South Korean vendor is expected to account for 29 percent of handset shipments during the year, up from 24 percent last year, says the research firm.
Meanwhile, Nokia has seen its share of shipments fall from 30 percent in 2011 to 24 percent in 2012.
The Finnish vendor has occupied the top spot in the phone market for fourteen years.
The cause of Nokia’s fall from grace has been its underperformance in the smartphone market, where its problems have been well documented.
Smartphones will account for nearly half of all handset shipments in 2012.
Nokia’s share of the smartphone market is now only five percent, a sharp decline from its 16 percent share in 2011.
The Finnish vendor is now a long way behind Samsung in the smartphone market, according to IHS iSuppli, with the new leader having a 28 percent market share this year.
Samsung has also lengthened its lead over rival Apple, which has a share of 20 percent. In 2011, the South Korean vendor had a market share of 20 percent, just ahead of Apple’s 19 percent.
With nearly half of shipments between them, the two vendors now dwarf their three nearest rivals (Nokia, HTC and RIM), who together muster only 15 percent of shipments between them.
