Report: UK talks tough on EU telecoms plan

01 OCT 2013

The UK has objected to new rules which would enable the European Commission to intervene in spectrum auctions, according to a Reuters report.

The proposals would enable the European watchdog to intervene in processes which it deemed overpriced or unfair, the report said. The UK authorities want any regulatory reform to take place “without affecting the competencies of member states in this area”.

It was noted that the European Commission has been critical of expensive auctions in the past. While the 4G auctions have brought in smaller amounts than the 3G processes more than ten years ago, operators are still committing significant sums to licences – even before taking into account the costs of rollouts.

Reuters also said that questions have been raised related to other proposals, including further cuts to roaming charges. These should be made “within the existing regulatory framework”.

European leaders are set to meet in Brussels next month to discuss the plan. Opposition could see it delayed or even blocked before the European elections next May.
