VIDEO INTERVIEW: Operators need to look beyond providing connectivity and delve into big data to stay relevant, urged Cyril Anand, assistant director, business development – mega projects, Ooredoo.

All connected devices generate valuable data, and operators should look into the business of analytics and big data, rather than being “narrow minded in trying to do something in Narrow Band IoT and forgetting the big picture of data analytics,” he told Mobile World Live.

He added that Ooredoo may have “missed the bus on OTT” and does not want to make the same mistake with IoT.

Ooredoo is “gravitating towards” software application development to make sense of data generated by IoT, finding stakeholders interested in it and then monetising it, he explained.

He also said that a preference towards LoRa, NB-IoT or other low power IoT technology should depend on the use case and operators need to see this as an integrated play and part of a larger wireless strategy, rather than hedging their bets on any one.
