Facing fierce competition, Japan’s NTT Docomo is to establish a number of new business units as part of a reorganisation aimed at better grabbing revenue from fresh business opportunities.

The new units will come into effect on July 1.

The four units are R&D Innovation Division; Service Design Department; Frontline Support Department and Billing Service Department.

Part of the new R&D unit is given over to service innovation with the aim to “create new services via technology innovation, big data analysis and technical support”.

The service design unit will provide support for smartphone apps and server systems behind new services.

There is also a greater emphasis on providing assistance to customers through the new frontline support department.

The billing department is set up to plan systems and processes for billing services.

Docomo and domestic rivals KDDI and SoftBank are engaged in a fierce price war, although Japan’s government has pledged to force prices lower through a number of measures, including licensing more MVNOs.
