EU digital commissioner Neelie Kroes has dropped a draft proposal that would have seen significant cuts to wholesale roaming rates, according to Reuters.

The report is based on a leaked internal EC document.

The proposed roaming rate cut is an important part of the EU’s forthcoming telecoms reform package.

An earlier draft seen by Reuters offered details of what Kroes proposed, including a price cap of €0.03 per minute for voice calls. The cap was to run from July 2014 until June 2022.

The new price cap would represent a 70 per cent reduction from the current €0.1 per minute rate, which came into effect in July this year.

Kroes also wanted to reduce the wholesale cap for data services to €0.015 per megabyte from the current cap of €0.15.

Mobile operators have opposed the proposal, arguing it will negatively impact network investment.

However the latest draft does not mention the wholesale price caps cited earlier.

Another recent report said that EC officials were thinking of amending Kroes’ proposal on roaming.
