Semiconductor manufacturer Semtech reportedly opened talks to acquire Canada-based equipment manufacturer Sierra Wireless, seeking to bolster its presence in the IoT sector.

Bloomberg reported talks were at an advanced stage, with a deal potentially set to be unveiled in a matter of days.

Sierra Wireless is a proponent of low power wide area (LPWA) connectivity for electronic systems requiring connectivity for IoT services while Semtech is best known for its LoRa technology.

The company previously struck deals to power consumer devices from Amazon, alongside work with big names including SoftBank Group and US cable company Comcast.

If a deal is not formally announced in the timeline suggested by Bloomberg, there may be an update from Sierra Wireless on 11 August, when it is due to release Q2 results.
