Originally planned for commercial rollout in March, AT&T has now launched its home automation service – Digital Life – in 15 US markets.

The so-called connected home, which has been trialled for some time, allows users to do various tasks remotely. The examples AT&T gives in its press release are “securing the home, checking in on your kids or pets, adjusting the temperature, letting your housesitter in the front door, or checking to see if you closed your garage door, from almost anywhere all on the go”.

Security is seen by AT&T, however, as one of the main attractions of Digital Life.

“We know how important security is to our customers, and this was our top priority when we set out to build Digital Life,” said Kevin Petersen, senior vice president, AT&T Digital Life. “People rely on their mobile devices more than ever, so Digital Life offers an easy and convenient way to secure their homes, protect their families and simplify their lives from virtually anywhere.”

Customers can choose from two base plans: Simple Security, which is the basic home security package, or Smart Security, which includes enhanced security features and the option to add home automation packages.

The Simple Security package is charged at $29.99 a month plus $149.99 for equipment and installation. Smart Security begins at $39.99 a month, plus $249.99 for equipment and installation.

In previous statements, AT&T has said it will have Digital Life centers in Atlanta and Dallas that it will manage the product.

AT&T plans to expand the service to 50 US markets nationwide by the end of 2013.
