India’s largest mobile operator Bharti Airtel has selected Sweden’s Ericsson to roll out its LTE-FDD network in the Delhi region.

As part of the four-year deal, Ericsson will provide its multi-standard radio equipment from its RBS 6000 base station family for macro and small-cell coverage. The agreement also includes deployment of its LTE RAN software.

In addition to Delhi, Ericsson has also partnered with Airtel to deploy LTE networks in four other regions.

Airtel has been aggressively pushing 4G across the country and recently said it plans to expand its 4G service, currently offered in 45 cities and towns, to 296 urban areas over the next few weeks.

The push is aimed at gaining an edge on new entrant Reliance Jio Infocomm, which has delayed its pan-India 4G launch from June to the end of the year.

Vodafone India, the country’s second largest operator, said last week it will launch 4G services in five cities, including Mumbai and Delhi, by the end of the year.
