Official WiGig products are now expected to be available in 2014, according to the group responsible for the technology’s development. The timeline can be interpreted as a delay on previous forecasts and comes as the group unveils new certification branding for the technology.

The new logo (pictured) is designed to assure consumers they are purchasing interoperable and official WiGig products. WiGig is a new technology operating in the unlicensed 60GHz band and providing short-range connectivity via speeds up to 7Gb/s.

Many products certified for interoperable WiGig operation are expected to also be equipped with Wi-Fi technology, in theory enabling seamless handover between the two technologies (Note: The Wi-Fi Alliance is the group responsible for WiGig certification, having acquired the WiGig Alliance earlier this year).

In addition, the Wi-Fi Alliance has transferred the WiGig Serial Extension Specification to the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF), enabling products currently connected by a wired USB to be linked wirelessly in future via WiGig. And in another development, the Wi-Fi Alliance is teaming with the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) to work on WiGig-enabled display port solutions for connecting PCs and handhelds to monitors, projectors and HDTVs.

Official certification of WiGig products has been pushed back more than once, as Mobile World Live has previously reported. Today’s news from the Wi-Fi Alliance doesn’t give specific details on launch dates of commercial, interoperable products, noting only that WiGig kit will enter the market “as soon as next year.” Until then, a series of plug-fests will take place to iron out any interoperating issues.
