Virgin Mobile Central and Eastern Europe (VMCEE), an MVNO set up to provide affordable mobile broadband services to the youth market, has drawn €40 million in new backing from investors, as it looks to expand in Poland and launch in Turkey.

The backers are Delta Partners Capital, IFC (a member of the World Bank), the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and CEE Mobile Capital.

As well as its financial backing, Delta has some heavyweight advice to offer as Kai-Uwe Ricke, a former CEO of Deutsche Telekom and the investment firm’s chairman, joins VMCEE’s board.

And Boris Nemsic, former CEO of Telekom Austria and VimpelCom as well as an executive partner at the investment firm, will join the board of Virgin Mobile Poland.

Virgin Mobile CEE, which was founded in 2011, launched its service in Poland in 2012 and plans a move into Turkey next year.

This latest funding creates a combined shareholder group that also includes Richard Branson’s Virgin Group, ePlanet Ventures, Archimedia and Dirlango.

Ambitions are running high: “Now, with the support of our new shareholders, we look forward to accelerating our growth in Poland and building the CEE region’s leading MVNO operation,” said VMCEE CEO Alan Gow.

Gow was previously CFO and managing director of Virgin Mobile UK.
