UK operator 3 is spreading its disruptive roaming plan by adding a further five countries including France to the roster where it does not levy an additional fee for travellers.

The Feel at Home tariff enables 3 subscribers to use calls, SMS and data from their domestic allowance with no extra cost when travelling abroad.

The tariff was launched in 2013 for eleven countries, including Australia, Hong Kong, Ireland and the US. Now 3 has added a further five: Finland, France, Israel, Norway and Switzerland.

The tariff will apply to these destinations from 1 July.

However, there are certain caveats about how the tariff works. The offer only applies to calls and SMS traffic back to the UK. To other destinations, subscribers will be charged at standard roaming rates.

Also, using a handset as a personal hotspot, so-called tethering, while abroad is not covered by the tariff.

And the 3 website mentions that the Feel at Home tariff is designed for holidaymakers or business travellers on a short trip and not for long-term residents abroad, although it does not mention a time-limit for foreign trips.

When subscribers use up their domestic allowance, they can either take an Add-On to their existing tariff or opt for 3’s roaming rates which are 20 pence a minute for calls to the UK; seven pence per minute for UK-bound texts; and internet data at 10 pence per MB.

Pay-as-you-go subscribers need to purchase an Add-On to participate in the roaming plan.
