TeliaSonera said that “following a fairly slow start, 4G is gradually turning into [its] customers’ favourite mobile data network,” with more than half of mobile data in Sweden, Norway and Denmark now being delivered over LTE networks.

In a blog post marking the five year anniversary of service launches in Stockholm and Oslo – trumpeted as the “world’s first” – the company said that 57 per cent of mobile data traffic in Sweden, 55 per cent in Norway, and 54 per cent in Denmark uses its 4G network.

“Customer usage varies across markets but we are now seeing a real breakthrough in some of the more mature markets,” Allan Kock, director of radio networks at TeliaSonera, said.

“The sharp rise in usage can be explained by a combination of increasingly better coverage, the availability of 4G enabled handsets and devices, good offerings and pricing, and content heavy services and applications,” Kock continued.
