Telefonica is to provide M2M connectivity for the Tesla Model S electric car in Europe – the first named customer of the M2M World Alliance.

Telefonica is one of eight operators behind the alliance, which offers global M2M services to corporate customers.

The service will offer navigation, online music, internet browsing and remote vehicle diagnostics to Tesla drivers in a number of European countries.

Telefonica will provide an M2M service in a number of countries including Germany, UK and Spain while KPN – another M2M World Alliance member –  covers the Netherlands and Belgium.

The underlying platform used by the alliance is supplied by Jasper Wireless.

A few months ago, Tesla chose AT&T as its M2M partner for the US market.

Jasper’s connected car cloud also delivers M2M service for ten other car manufacturers worldwide including VW, GM, Ford, Nissan and Audi.
