LIVE FROM FT-TELEFONICA MILLENNIALS SUMMIT: Latin American and Western European operator Telefonica today released a comprehensive report analysing the thoughts and concerns of what it dubs the ‘Millennial Generation’; 18-30 year-olds who are highly technology-literate, are likely to play a major role in driving tomorrow’s economy, and who will also be earmarked as just the sort of customers that the digitally-focused operator will want to attract.

The report was unveiled this morning by José Maria Álvarez-Pallete (pictured), chief operating officer of Telefonica. As well as providing data on the impact this audience believes technology is having on their everyday life, the report also shows that millennials’ interests extend beyond technology; to concern about the economy, the environment, social inequality, education and personal freedoms.

“We need to understand what millennials are going to be doing with our services in the next few years. This is the biggest technological revolution ever and millennials are in the driving seat,” said Álvarez-Pallete. Noting that millennials are a “smartphone generation,” he said that Telefonica plans to act upon the findings: “We will take the lessons we have learnt from this survey – we need to ensure we make technology available and keep investing significantly in networks, help re-engage the digital generation, keep listening to this generation, close the skills gap in Europe, and advocate to expand education for all.”

A snapshot of the findings is shown in the infographic below. More information on the report – which surveyed more than 12,000 people in 27 countries – is available here.
