VIDEO INTERVIEW: Standards for 5G may not yet have been set but companies are moving fast to capture the space, noted Gregory Lee, president of Samsung Electronics, North America, adding that “the enablement of applications will be tremendous”.

Included in his grand vision is opera and jazz bands playing together and doctors performing surgery from different locations, as well as robot boxing, all thanks to the minimal latency that 5G will bring.

He also spoke about the future of smartwatches: he believes there is work to be done to convince people that such devices can solve real problems for them.

According to Lee, when it comes to any innovation there is around 15 to 20 per cent of users who appreciate a new device and will jump on board immediately, but everyone else will wait until issues like battery life and accuracy of data recorded are solved before they consider making a purchase.

Samsung has been talking about digital convergence for years but it’s only now, thanks to the “densification of networks” and technology like the cloud, that it can work towards bringing all of its products together, Lee commented.
