Orange would bid for smaller rival Yoigo or fixed player Jazztel if they become available, one of the operator’s senior executives told local media.

“If the sale were formally reopened, we intend to participate,” said Federico Colom, Orange Spain’s finance director.

His comments were reported by El Pais, among others.

A move for Jazztel would make sense for Orange, the country’s second-largest operator, as it seeks to match the fixed-network credentials of rivals Telefonica and Vodafone. The latter bought cable operator Ono earlier this year to fill out its quadplay offering. Acquiring Jazztel would strengthen Orange’s own package of fixed and mobile services.

Alternatively the operator could bolster its position in the mobile market by acquiring Yoigo, the country’s smallest operator which lags behind its more established rivals.

However, Colom also said the priority for Orange remains organic growth. He was speaking at the UIMP conference in Santander.

Talk of Orange’s interest in either operator is not new, however. Price is likely to be a key factor in any negotiation with either company. Last year, a possible acquisition of Yoigo fell through over differing valuations.
