South Korean operators SK Telecom (SKT) and LG U+ will make the first commercial Internet of Things (IoT) deployments based on specifications from oneM2M, a group formed by a number of standards bodies and intended to deliver a scalable and interoperable machine-to-machine framework.

In a statement, it was said that LG U+ had added oneM2M support to its existing IoT service infrastructure in order to target the international market.

SKT began development of an open-source platform called Mobius in 2011, in partnership with the Korea Electronics Technology Institute. When the oneM2M candidate release was announced in August 2014, it was integrated within Mobius to finish the development of a “commercialisation-ready” platform.

OneM2M was formed in 2012, with the aim of developing a common platform which could be used by service providers across a number of sectors, including smart grids, connected cars, eHealth, enterprise supply chain, home automation and energy management, and public safety.

The operator support was announced at a showcase event held in Sophia Antipolis, France, this week.

LG U+ held a demonstration in partnership with LG Electronics, Modacom and Eluon.

SK Telecom demonstrated Mobius alongside Convida Wireless, Fraunhofer, KETI, NEC and nTels.

Standards organisations involved in oneM2M are the Association of Radio Industries and Businesses (ARIB) and the Telecommunication Technology Committee (TTC) of Japan; the Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS) and the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) of the USA; the China Communications Standards Association (CCSA); the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI); and the Telecommunications Technology Association (TTA) of Korea.
